What were the problems you experienced (on the day) in setting up this workshop?

Well…

First of all we had networking problems with the laptops – not a good enough signal strength in the room to use them wirelessly. Fortunately the very helpful IT Section came to our rescue and did some ‘emergency’ hard wiring to provide us with the essential internet connect. The issues was a ‘critical incident’ for the IT department on the issue of communication. A good learning outcome for all (I hope!).

The laptops then would periodically ‘log-off’ the network after a period of inactivity. It looked like Beth and Kathy from OTEN would be running around all night entering their passwords to keep the connection open! But fortunately through our discussion with the OTEN IT people, we realised that any of us with TAFE / DET accounts could log in at OTEN. We therefore made sure that each table had a TAFE / DET person on it to manage the connection.

A last minute power surge (alarm bells ringing through the building) had us all on the edge…

Steve’s Zen approach to it all was very comforting.

I’d just like to also strongly recommend you allow at least 4 hours to set up and test technology similar to what we were using (laptops, internet connection, projectors) and also find out about any ‘firewall’ that may be present. A firewall can block access to some of the Web 2.0 sites similar to those we were using on the night.

Bush and the Republicans were not protecting us on 9-11, and we aren’t a lot safer now. We may be more afraid due to george bush, but are we safer? Being fearful does not necessarily make one safer. Fear can cause people to hide and cower. What do you think? Why has bush turned our country from a country of hope and prosperity to a country of belligerence and fear.
If ever there was ever a time in our nation’s history that called for a change, this is it!
The more people that the government puts in jails, the safer we are told to think we are. The real terrorists are wherever they are, but they aren’t living in a country with bars on the windows. We are.
