Group reflection – Week 9

Practice of Workplace Learning 2

REFLECTION ON GROUP PROCESS
Wednesday 11 October 2006

Artemio and Cecilia were absent and it seems that when two or more people are absent the group dynamic changes quite noticeably, as if a link is missing and we have to re-negotiate our relationships with each other and with the group as a whole.

Laraine bravely chose to share some personal and critical concerns that arose from her self reflection on her role within the group. This was a brave thing to do, as she raised a difficult issue that has been a concern for some members of the group at times. I felt we were able to acknowledge and address her concerns and move on in a constructive manner. Personally, I feel that in many ways Laraine’s sharing her reflection with the group will make the reflection process easier for everyone.

I have noticed the power dynamics shift and move around the table, occasionally it is targeted and focused on one or two people, and at other times it is more inclusive with the energy swirling around the table. This makes for a stimulating group process as it is never predictable. The fluid nature of the facilitation of the group process has had quite a lot to do with the sense of equality and respect we have for each other. Discussions about the group process and group dynamic were enlightening and interesting as there is a general consensus that fundamentally we all respect each other and seem to have created a safe and trusting environment that is conducive to exploring and developing ideas for the workshop, and to ultimately make it happen.

The actual form and content of the workshop is yet to be clearly visualized and articulated as Steve Parker has still not contacted Beth (I think he is on holiday in New Zealand!). This has ‘thrown a spanner in the works’ to some degree. However Bianca, Ian, Kathy G and Gary were able to identify tasks that could be addressed in the meantime, like the budget, the flyer and ticket, the catering etc.

I think some of us (well, me!) are feeling a little under-utilised at present, and not quite clear as to how to make a valuable contribution. However, I think there is a general awareness that we all have different skills, knowledge and experience that will be used eventually. In due course, everything will balance out.

Generally speaking, I feel that the ‘Learning Without Borders’ group are functioning well as a team and consciously or not, implementing many of the strategies and practices that are required for good, healthy and constructive team work and management.
